Holly (Ilex opaca) is a domestic wood that is excellent turning, carving, and inlay. Very rare due to the slow rate of growth and small size of the trees that are harvested. Must be cut in winter to avoid blue-stain or graying of the wood. Holly ranges in color from white to ivory. Holly has a very close irregular grain with little or no dicernable figure.

The typical Holly board sought for is uniform, pale white color. Some boards can develop a bluish to gray tint, which is a result of not being dried properly after being cut. To preserve the white color, Holly is generally cut during the winter and kiln dried before summer. The lumber has a fine, even texture with an irregular, closed grain. Holly is rated great as a turnery wood.

Holly is a more expensive wood for several reasons: It is difficult to find trees large enough for cost-effective production, kiln drying takes a gentle touch as well as experience to keep it flat and straight. We are indeed fortunate to have a supply of Holly that has been expertly kiln dryed and has been carefully stored to ensure warping is prevented. Holly is an excellent choice for inlays, segmented turnings, and small novelty items.

Need Help Figuring out how much you need ?

One Board foot = 144 Cubic Inches

Example: If you need a piece of wood 12 inches wide, 1 inch thick and 24 inches long, that is equal to 2 board feet.

12 inches x 1 inch x 24 inches = 288 inches. 288/ 144 = 2 board feet
