Flat, Square, and the Exact Thickness You Need

Planing at CAG Specialty Wood in Gainesville, GA

Rough-sawn lumber and slabs that have already been flattened still need a consistent, precise thickness before they're ready for a cabinet shop, a furniture build, or finishing. CAG Specialty Wood planes boards, slabs, and dimensional lumber on our own equipment in Gainesville, so material comes out flat, square, and uniform from end to end, not just roughly close.

Planing is one of the most common pairings with our other services: resawn stock gets planed to final thickness, flattened slabs get planed smooth on the second face, and kiln-dried lumber gets planed to the exact spec a cabinet shop or furniture maker needs before it leaves our yard. We can also plane lumber or slabs customers bring in from another supplier.

S3S (surfaced 3 sides, one straight edge plus two flat faces) is what we typically stock here under planing. If you're gluing up a panel, tabletop, or any assembly where boards need to sit flush on every side, ask for full S4S instead: straight-lined and planed on all four sides. S3S alone isn't glue-up ready.

Questions About Planing at CAG

What's the difference between planing and flattening?

Flattening removes cup, twist, and taper from a rough slab or panel. Planing brings a board or slab to a precise, consistent thickness once it's already reasonably flat. Many jobs use both.

I'm gluing up a panel or tabletop. Do I need S3S or S4S?

S4S. S3S (surfaced 3 sides) is what we typically stock here under planing, but it leaves one side unplaned, so it isn't glue-up ready on its own. For a glue-up, boards need to sit flush on every side, which means full S4S: straight-lined and planed all around. Let us know it's for a glue-up when you order and we'll quote it that way.

Can I bring in lumber from another supplier to be planed?

Yes, we plane material regardless of where it was originally purchased.

What's the biggest board you can plane?

Our equipment handles material up to 54 inches wide, the same limit as our milling services.

Do you plane slabs as well as dimensional lumber?

Yes, slab second faces are one of the most common planing jobs we do.

How precise is the finished thickness?

We plane to the specific thickness you need for your project, consistent across the full length and width of the board.

Can planing be done the same day as resawing?

In many cases yes, since the two are often done back-to-back on the same piece of material.
