From Log to Lumber, Done In-House

Milled lumber and slabs at CAG Specialty Wood in Gainesville, GA

CAG Specialty Wood is a family-owned sawmill and specialty lumber yard in Gainesville, Georgia, milling furniture-grade lumber, slabs, and mantels up to 54 inches wide for contractors, cabinet shops, furniture makers, and homeowners working with wood from their own property. Bring in logs from a tree that came down in your yard, rough-cut lumber from another supplier, or start from scratch with wood from our stock. Every step happens on our own equipment in Gainesville, sawing, resawing, planing, and straight-lining, so nothing gets sent out to a second shop and nothing sits in a queue at somebody else's mill.

Contractors use it for dimensional lumber cut to spec. Cabinet shops use resawing to get matched panels with mirrored grain. Furniture makers use straight-lining, S3S, or full S4S to get boards ready for the next step without extra shop time, S4S specifically when boards are headed into a glue-up. Homeowners bring in a downed tree and walk away with usable lumber instead of firewood.

Sawing, Resawing, Planing, and Straight-Lining

Milling is billed at $150 per hour and covers everything it takes to turn a log or rough board into usable, furniture-grade material. Most jobs combine two or three of these steps, depending on what the finished piece needs to look like.

Sawing & Custom Cutting

Logs and rough lumber cut to your exact dimensions on our band saw mill, up to 54 inches wide. This is the starting point for live-edge slabs, structural beams, and mantels, and it's also where a downed tree from your own property gets turned into usable boards instead of firewood.

Resawing

Thicker stock resawn down to a maximum of 16 inches wide, most often to produce matched panels, veneers, or book-matched slab pairs where the grain needs to mirror across two boards cut from the same piece.

Planing

Precise thickness adjustment so boards arrive flat and at the exact spec your project calls for, whether that's finish-ready material for a cabinet shop or a rough board you're squaring up yourself.

Straight Lining / S3S / S4S

Furniture-grade edge prep: straight-lining, S3S (what we typically stock), or full S4S on all four sides. Gluing up a panel or tabletop? You'll want S4S. Learn more →

Most of what comes through our mill is domestic hardwood, along with live-edge slabs and the occasional exotic species when it's available in the yard. If you're bringing your own log or lumber, we can typically mill it regardless of species, ask when you call.

"I brought my wood top for my work bench up here to have it leveled. They did a great job at a reasonable price, I couldn't be happier. I'm definitely planning on bringing up some logs from the yard to have it cut into usable lumber. I'm very happy with my experience!"
